A useful consultation starts with a clear picture of your situation. You do not need to know the legal answer before you call. You do need to explain what happened, what you want to achieve and whether any date is approaching. These preparation steps can help make the conversation more focused.

Write a short timeline

List the key events in date order, including conversations, payments, notices and important decisions. Separate what you know directly from what someone else told you. If you are unsure about a date, mark it as approximate instead of guessing.

A one-page timeline is usually easier to discuss than a large unsorted collection of messages.

Collect the relevant records

Bring the latest agreement, notices, receipts, emails, screenshots or other records connected to the issue. Keep original files where possible and avoid editing a record before seeking advice. Make a note of what is missing so the adviser knows the limits of the information available.

  • The document that created the relationship or transaction
  • Later changes, notices and responses
  • Proof of payments or other important events
  • Names and roles of the people or organizations involved

Ask for a consultation

Decide what you need from the call

You may want to understand your options, review a document, respond to a notice, or find a professional in the relevant location. Write your top three questions. Mention any urgent deadline at the start of the conversation so the adviser can prioritize it.

Ask what work is included in the consultation, whether a written review is separate and what any next step may cost. Availability, fees and the right professional for the matter should be confirmed before work begins.

Protect your information

For a first enquiry, share only enough detail to identify the kind of matter and the relevant location. Ask for an appropriate way to provide confidential documents if a review is agreed. A website article or brief message cannot determine the correct legal response to an individual situation.
